Habitat Professionals Forum Parallel Events at Istanbul + 5
In June 2001, five years after Habitat II, the General
Assembly of the United Nations held a special session to review and
appraise implementation of the
Habitat
Agenda worldwide. On each of the three days of the special session, the
Habitat Professionals Forum convened lunchtime discussions to exchange
professional views concerning key aspects of the Habitat Agenda. Each session featured one resource person who
was asked to make a brief presentation; followed with an active discussion with
the participants.
In addition Dr. Irene Wiese - von Ofen, Chair of the
Habitat Professionals Forum was invited to made a presentation
on behalf of the Professionals Forum at the Plenary Session of the General
Assembly.

Discussion of the Global Campaign for Secure Tenure.
Prof. Holger Magel, Institute of Geodesy, GIS and Land Management, at
the Technical University of Münich and incoming President of the International
Federation of Surveyors (FIG), provided a presentation, followed by a
discussion with all participants facilitated by Irene Wiese – von Ofen,
President of the International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP) and
Chair of the Steering Committee, Habitat Professionals Forum.
Holger Magel is an expert on Land Management, Land
Tenure and Land Development. He has worked with governments in several
continents, associations for international development cooperation like GTZ, DFG,
HSS, cooperatives, and NGO's over many years. In June 2000 on behalf of the
German Federal Government he organized the International Conference on rural
areas „Rural 21".

Discussion of the Global Campaign for Governance.
Dr. Demetrios Argyriades, Advisor on governance and capacity-building,
United Nations, will provide a brief presentation, followed by a discussion
with all participants facilitated by Dina Rachewsky, Director General of
the Planning Administration of Israel and Bureau Member of the IFHP.
Dr. Demetrios Argyriades has worked at the United
Nations for over 25 years in various capacities. His areas of specialization
include capacity building, institutional reinforcement and human resources
development in the public service, public service professionalism and ethics,
civil society reinforcement, NGO’s, and administrative reform. Dr. Argyriades
has taught at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands, the
University of Edmonton, Canada, the University of Athens, Greece and has served
as an adjunct professor at the Wagner School of NYU since 1975. He is presently
a consultant to several UN as well as EU projects.

Discussion of the relationship between the global
campaigns for secure tenure and good governance and Finance for Development
(FfD).
Michael Cohen, Director of the Graduate Program in International Affairs
at the New School University in New York and a Visiting Fellow at the
International Center for Advanced Studies at New York University (NYU) will make
a brief presentation, followed by a discussion with all participants facilitated
by Dr. Eva Hedman, Expert of the National Board of Housing Building and
Planning of Sweden and member of the Swedish delegation to Istanbul+5.
Michael Cohen worked at the World Bank from 1972 to
1999 and was responsible for much of the urban policy development of the Bank
over that period. He has worked in over 50 countries and was heavily involved in
the Bank’s work on infrastructure, environment, and sustainable development.
He is currently completing a study on urban inequality in Buenos Aires where he
worked in 1998-1999 as well as a larger project on the lessons of international
urban assistance in 10,000 cities and towns around the world from 1970 to 2000.
