Habitat Professionals Forum at International
Conferences and Events

The first
major meeting of the Habitat Professionals Forum took place at the Global Conference on the Urban
Future - Urban 21 in Berlin 5 July 2000.
The Chair of the Forum at Urban 21 was Dr. Irene Wiese - von Ofen,
President of the International Federation of Housing and Planning. The Forum
heard opening remarks from Dr. Klaus Töpfer, Acting Executive Director
of the United Nations Center for Human Settlements, delivered in Dr. Töpfer's
absence by Manfried Konukiewitz. Presentations were then made by representatives of four of the sponsoring
organizations. David Mammen as rapporteur made his summary of the
Forum. A summary of the Forum was then presented at the final plenary session of
Urban 21 by Dr. Wiese - von Ofen.

In June 2001, five years after Habitat II, the General
Assembly of the United Nations held a special session to review and
appraise implementation of the Habitat
Agenda worldwide. On each of the three days of the special session, the
Habitat Professionals Forum convened lunchtime discussions to exchange
professional views concerning key aspects of the Habitat Agenda. Each session featured one resource person who
was asked to make a brief presentation; followed with an active discussion with
the participants. In addition Dr. Irene Wiese - von Ofen, Chair of the
Habitat Professionals Forum was invited to made a
presentation
on behalf of the Professionals Forum at the Plenary Session of the General
Assembly.

Habitat Professionals Forum at the 2nd World
Urban Forum
The Habitat Professionals Forum organised its
latest activity at the 2nd World Urban Forum - “Cities: Crossroads of Cultures –
inclusiveness and integration?”, which was organised by UN-Habitat in Barcelona,
Spain, September 13-17, 2004. The conference attracted almost 5,000 registered
participants. This 2nd WUF included dialogues and networking events that were
organized by UN-Habitat with several partners representing governments, local
authorities, CBOs, NGOs, international donors and professionals like the Habitat
Professionals Forum and FIG.
The conference programme included nine dialogues
with all Habitat partners and almost 100 networking events were divided under
six themes: city management, finance, housing and infrastructure,
sustainability, inclusiveness, and risks.
The Habitat Professionals Forum together with the
UN-Habitat organised one of the networking events under the title "The
Challenges of City Financing: Habitat’s Professionals Forum and Land and Urban
Poverty".
The speakers in this session included Dr.
Irene Wiese - von Ofen as moderator and Prof. Horst Zimmermann
(Germany), Prof. Om Prakash Mathur (India), Prof. A. C. Mosha
(Botswana) and Mr. Timo Härmälä (Finland) as keynote speakers. This
session was attended by almost 100 participants and the discussion during the
three hour session was very lively.
After the networking event the Steering Committee
of the Habitat Professionals Forum had its meeting at which Dr. Wiese - von Ofen
after chairing the Forum for its first five years gave the chairmanship to Univ.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Magel for the next period. Prof. Magel is President
of the International Federation of Surveyors, FIG.
