What are water filters and how do they work?

We all know that water is very important for us since our body is mostly made out of the water. Two-thirds of our body are water. So you can see that water is essentially life. You can survive without food for a week or two but if you are out of water for a couple of days well you know what will happen. So that is why we need to have fresh and healthy water every day.

We have two types of water filters. The first type is a filter which has a physical barrier. That barrier is used for removing some bigger minerals and impurities while water passes through it. It is the most used method because it contains no chemicals and is considered to be healthier. The second method is the use of water filter which contains chemicals. These chemicals are active, so when the water passes through them, the chemicals start reacting and the impurities are being removed. Most of the time, companies will offer the mix of chemical and physical barriers for the maximum effect and the best taste of water.

Active carbon

The one method that is the most popular one is the active carbon. It is in the form of granules, and it is based on charcoal. Charcoal is made when we burn something, usually wood. Charcoal attracts impurities from the water and traps them, which is called adsorption and it is a normal process. It can filter a wide variety of impurities like metals especially the heavy ones, or chemicals that are based on chlorine, etc. But everything has a price. Eventually, it will be clogged, and you will need to replace it.

Reverse osmosis

This method works in a different matter. It uses a filtering membrane which is filtering the water. This method is also very effective because the membrane filters the water which is under pressure and that water is going through the membrane, leaving impurities behind. It is one of the most popular methods because it uses no chemicals which mean it is safe, and the only thing you need to do is eventually replace the membrane if something happens. It is not effective against bacteria, and the main drawback is that it wastes a lot of water.

Exchange of Ion

These are the typical softeners. They are used to soften the water, or in other words, they eliminate lime scale. This filter is good because it is splitting atoms of impurity and it makes ions. Long story short, it makes good ions and releases them while trapping the bad ions. This method is also popular in a lot of machines that filter water. However, there are some drawbacks here as well. First, your filters need to be changed, and you need to add special sodium. And second, your water is not pure. It will contain an amount of sodium which can be a problem to people who are on a low-sodium diet. Having in mind all this, it is very important to choose your filtering very carefully if you want to be satisfied.
